Shabnum Khan, a Healthcare Assistant at Atholl House Medical Nursing Home, chose to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care to strengthen her knowledge and become more confident in her role.
She wanted to develop a deeper understanding of care planning, person-centred care and the legislation that guides good practice. Shabnum also wanted to learn how to prevent and respond to challenging situations, while becoming more confident when speaking to other professionals.
“I wanted to strengthen my knowledge and improve my confidence when communicating with other professionals,” said Shabnum.
Shabnum was initially apprehensive about starting the course because she found written work challenging. However, the thorough support she received from her trainer, Claire Simpson, helped her overcome this concern.
Claire provided detailed information during every session and encouraged Shabnum to step outside her comfort zone, contribute to discussions and believe in her own abilities.
“Claire was really thorough with every session and gave me so much useful, in-depth information,” Shabnum explained.
“She pushed me out of my shyness and encouraged me to talk more. I was apprehensive because I struggle with writing, but Claire really helped me overcome that.”
Throughout the course, Shabnum developed a stronger understanding of care plans and how they support high-quality, person-centred care.
She has applied this knowledge in her day-to-day role and improved her ability to delegate tasks effectively, helping to ensure responsibilities are completed to the highest possible standard.
Shabnum now feels more confident sharing what she has learned with colleagues. She has also been given opportunities to develop her knowledge of medication with support from nurses and nursing assistants.
The course has strengthened her professional confidence and given her the skills to contribute more effectively within her workplace.
Claire has seen a noticeable change in Shabnum throughout the programme.
Claire said:
“Shabnum has worked incredibly hard and should be very proud of what she has achieved. At the beginning of the course, she was quite shy and lacked confidence when speaking, but she gradually found her voice and became much more comfortable sharing her knowledge and ideas.
“She was always willing to learn, take feedback on board and challenge herself. It has been wonderful to see her apply her learning at work, support her colleagues and recognise just how capable she is.”

Shabnum would encourage anyone considering the course to take the opportunity, even if they feel unsure about studying or completing written work.
“I would definitely say 'try the course'. I was apprehensive because I struggle with writing, but Claire really helped me overcome that.”
Reflecting on her experience, Shabnum added:
“I just want to say a massive thank you to Claire for all the hard work and trust she has shown me along the way.”
