When Jess McCarthy began a Level Two early years qualification, she couldn’t have imagined that two decades later she would be the Early Years and Operations Director of a rapidly expanding nursery group.

A rich and varied career in Early Years

Jess’s career in the sector has been diverse and rewarding. Starting as an apprentice, she progressed through roles including deputy manager and nursery manager, before moving into strategic management positions with successful early years providers. Her experience also includes working as a Senior Early Years Quality Manager at Monkey Puzzle.

Leading growth at Toots Nursery Group

Jess is now thriving in her role as Early Years Operations Director at Toots Nursery Group, which operates seven settings across the south-east and continues to grow through acquisition.

The importance of Level 2 and 3 qualifications

Reflecting on her career, Jess highlights the critical role that her Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications played in her development:

“I’ve absolutely loved my career so far, but I genuinely don’t think I’d have had the progression I have without the grounding, education, and understanding given to me by the Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications.

People should not underestimate how important those first steps into the industry are. The work you do at Level 2 gives you the platform for a successful career, which is important for both the individual and the nursery setting.

“My Level 2 gave me an excellent overview of early years and taught me a lot about what I needed to do to help create a successful and enjoyable environment for the children attending, which is the most important thing. Everything I learnt back then has helped shape my career and influences the way I help our teams create the best nurseries they can be.”

A natural calling for Early Years

Jess believes her passion for early years was always destined:

“When I was at school, I naturally gravitated towards looking after and mentoring younger children. I did work experience in Year 10 at the local village Pre-School I attended as a child. I loved that experience, and that was the moment I knew for sure I wanted to work in early years.”
