After working in the NHS for several years, Thomas decided it was time to take on a new challenge. With dreams of becoming a physiotherapist, he knew a Level 2 maths qualification was the first step. Balancing a full-time role as an Ophthalmic Technician with his studies, Thomas turned to Realise for support.
Career journey so far
After leaving school, Thomas took the next step into college, studying for both a BTEC Diploma in Applied Science and a BTEC Diploma in Public Services. With both qualifications under his belt, he joined the NHS and began working as an Assistant Theatre Practitioner. "Once I achieved both qualifications, I then went ahead and joined the NHS as an Assistant Theatre Practitioner. After a year of working as an ATP, I then applied for the position of Ophthalmic Technician in Ophthalmology, where I am currently working."
Discovering Realise
Thomas found out Realise through his workplace intranet. The NHS regularly offers staff opportunities to build their skills, and Thomas saw a chance to do just that by enrolling on the Level 2 maths course. "The NHS offers courses to expand on your skills or portfolio, so I went ahead with Level 2 maths."
Getting started
At the time of starting the course, Thomas was already working full-time as an Ophthalmic Technician. Although he felt nervous at the start, the warm welcome from their tutor, Martin, quickly helped him feel at ease. "Martin was very friendly and approachable," he said.
Learning that works
The support from their tutor was one of the highlights of the course. Weekly team calls helped make the learning interactive and personalised, especially when tackling the more challenging maths topics. "I enjoyed doing the Teams maths sessions with my tutor; we would discuss topics that I struggled with and find ways to get to the answer."
Looking ahead
Completing the Level 2 maths course has opened new doors. With this qualification in hand, Thomas is now taking the next step towards a career in Physiotherapy. "With my Level 2 maths complete, I will now apply for a Certificate of Higher Education in Health Science. Once I achieve this, I can apply to universities for a degree in Physiotherapy."
Words of encouragement
When asked what he would say to someone thinking of starting a course with Realise, Thomas only had positive things to say. "I would say Realise are very professional and friendly. If you feel as though there are certain subjects that are too difficult to achieve, then mention it to Realise and they will help you achieve this."
Final thoughts
As Thomas prepares for the next stage in his journey, he reflects on his positive experiences with Realise. "I would like to thank all the staff who work at Realise, especially my tutor, Martin, who has helped me throughout the course."
