Precious Douglas, a Healthcare Support Worker at Creative Support Ltd, chose to complete the Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care to strengthen his knowledge and provide the highest possible standard of care to the people he supports.
The programme helped Precious develop his understanding of person-centred care, safeguarding, information handling and effective communication. He has since applied this learning throughout his day-to-day role.
“I took the apprenticeship to improve my knowledge so I could provide the best quality of care to the people I support,” said Precious.
One of the most important areas of development for Precious was person-centred practice.
Through the apprenticeship, he strengthened his understanding of how to involve people in decisions about their own care, ensuring their individual needs, preferences and choices remain central to the support they receive.
Precious has also developed his safeguarding knowledge and follows the correct procedures to protect clients and support their safety and wellbeing.
The programme reinforced the importance of handling personal information securely and responsibly.
Precious now takes additional care to ensure confidential information is stored safely, paperwork is locked away and computers are always secured when they are not in use.
His communication with colleagues and clients has also improved, helping him share information more clearly and contribute more effectively as part of the wider care team.
Completing the apprenticeship has increased Precious’s knowledge and changed how he approaches his daily responsibilities.
It has also created opportunities for him to develop further. With support from colleagues, Precious has been able to build his knowledge of medication and learn from the experience of others within his workplace.
“The apprenticeship has improved my knowledge and how I carry out my day-to-day activities,” he explained.
Precious received regular guidance and encouragement from his trainer, Claire Simpson, throughout the programme.
“Claire was a wonderful trainer and facilitator. She has broad knowledge and experience, and she is really good at what she does,” said Precious.
Her support helped him work through the programme, explore reliable sources of information and build knowledge that he could apply directly within his role.
Precious would encourage other care professionals to take the opportunity to develop through an apprenticeship.
“It is a very important step in your health and social care career. I would definitely encourage others to do it.”
