ILM Principles of Leadership and Management - Level 3

About the course

The ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) Certificate in the Principles of Leadership and Management Level 3 is ideal for aspiring or existing supervisors, team leaders and managers who want to strengthen their leadership skills.

This practical, flexible 12-week programme fits around your work and helps you build the knowledge, confidence and behaviours needed to progress into leadership or management roles. You’ll be supported throughout by our experienced training team, gaining real-world insight, personalised guidance and practical tools to become a confident, effective leader.

Learning is delivered remotely through interactive webinars, one-to-one trainer support and independent online learning. Your dedicated trainer will support you every step of the way.

This free course is only available to learners in West Yorkshire (Leeds, Wakefield, Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees).

What you will learn:  

You’ll achieve the ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) Certificate in the Principles of Leadership and Management Level 3 and develop a broad range of essential leadership and management skills. 

Key areas include: 

• Decision-making and problem solving: Learn how to identify and analyse workplace challenges, gather and interpret information, evaluate options, and confidently plan, communicate and review effective decisions.

• Leadership development: Build your understanding of leadership qualities, reflect on your own potential, identify development needs, and develop yourself and others to achieve organisational objectives.

• Managing people and performance: Gain practical skills in communicating vision, motivating and developing teams, applying motivational theory, delivering workplace training, and coaching individuals to improve performance.

• Workplace relationships and responsibility: Develop strategies to manage conflict, understand sustainability and corporate social responsibility, address environmental challenges, and explore how organisational environments can support greener working practices.
  
  

By the end of the 12-week programme, you’ll feel equipped with practical skills, knowledge and confidence to lead with impact. 

How you’ll learn

The programme is delivered over 12 weeks, with various start dates available between March and July 2026. 

All learning takes place on interactive webinars with additional one-to-one support sessions, giving you a high-quality, personalised learning experience.

• Independent learning activities
• Impartial Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG)
• Access to an e-portfolio to track progress and evidence your learning journey
  

Eligibility

You can apply if you:

• Live in West Yorkshire
• Are employed, unemployed, or volunteering
• Earn less than £25,750 per year OR it’s your first full Level 3 qualification
• Are not currently on another funded course (such as an apprenticeship)
• Are ordinarily resident in the UK and have a visa that allows you to complete the full course

Qualifications

• You are eligible if it’s your first full Level 3 qualification, or
• If you already have a Level 3 or above, you must be earning gross annual earnings below the earnings threshold which is £25,750 (the prior Level 3 or above must be in a different subject e.g. you couldn’t do a Degree in Business Management, then undertake a Level 3 Business Management qualification).
• A Levels and Level 3 Diplomas, Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas, Access Courses, Degrees are all level 3 or above (please note this list is not exhaustive).

You cannot apply if you:

• Are currently enrolled on another funded training programme including an apprenticeship or advanced learner loan qualification
• Hold any of the following visa types:
  • Skilled Worker
  • Seasonal Worker (or Partner)
  • Student (or Partner)
  • Graduate (or Partner)
