The early years sector needs skilled, confident SEND practitioners like never before. With more children presenting with complex and varied needs, early years staff play a vital role in ensuring every child receives the best start in life.
 

Our Technical Specialist in Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) in Early Years qualification is designed specifically for those working with young children who want to build specialist SEND knowledge, improve inclusive practice, and support children and families more effectively.

Whether you’re already working in early years or are looking to step into the sector, this programme gives you the tools, behaviours and confidence to make a measurable impact.



Who is this course for?

You should consider applying if you:

✔ Are qualified to Level 2 in Early Years (recommended)
✔ Have experience working with babies or young children
✔ Are aged 16+
✔ Live in South Yorkshire
✔ Want to build specialist SEND expertise
✔ Are working (or hoping to work) in nursery, early years or teaching

 

Course structure and delivery

  • Online learning – flexible and accessible for working practitioners
  • 24 Guided Learning Hours - 2 sessions per month, 3 hours per session, 4 months total

 

You’ll complete two mandatory units:

1. Roles and Responsibilities of the Special Educational Needs Coordinator in the Early Years
2. Strategies and Techniques for Supporting Children & Families

 

What you’ll learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand the SENCO role and your responsibilities
  • Apply strategies to support children with SEND and their families
  • Create inclusive, child-led environments that promote rich play
  • Work effectively with parents, carers and external professionals
  • Mentor and guide colleagues to support SEND needs within your setting
  • Ensure your practice meets EYFS standards and SEND Code of Practice guidance

This programme builds on the Early Years Educator standard to deepen your skillset, enhance inclusive practice and strengthen outcomes for babies and young children.

After completing this qualification, you may progress into roles such as:


    • Early Years SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator)
    • SEND Support Practitioner
    • Early Years Educator (with SEND focus)
