Care apprenticeship transforms Victoria’s life

January 2025

A Sunderland woman who has faced numerous challenges and obstacles has lauded an apprenticeship in health and social care for transforming both her career and personal life.

Victoria Wright, of Houghton-le-Spring, said her transition into the adult care workforce was not easy or straightforward – but her confidence had improved dramatically since completing the Level 2 adult care worker apprenticeship with leading training provider Realise.

“There were times when life felt like an uphill battle, but I never gave up on my desire to achieve more,” said 42-year-old Victoria, speaking during National Apprenticeship Week.

“I left school with just one GCSE and then my early career in health and beauty was interrupted by becoming a young mother at 17.

“I faced some health issues and had a mini stroke at 22. It was difficult.”

In 2017, Victoria returned to college to complete a hairdressing diploma but her life was thrown into turmoil again when her marriage ended during the covid pandemic.

In late 2021, partly inspired by the role of care workers during the pandemic, Victoria hung up her hairbrush and scissors and embarked on a career in the care sector, landing a role with Four Seasons Care Home.

She said: “I was in a situation where I needed a new job and I found adult care. To maintain my position, I had to complete the care certificate and the Level 2 apprenticeship.

“Despite the ongoing upheavals in my life, I committed to professional development and threw myself into learning.”

Victoria started the apprenticeship with a different training provider but, when that organisation ceased trading, she was transferred to Realise.

“The change was a blessing in disguise,” she said. “I received far superior support from Realise’s tutors and mentors. They really took the time to understand me and to help me progress.

“Last year, my youngest daughter was diagnosed with autism but the research skills I had developed during the course enabled me to put effective strategies in place for my family.

“The course didn’t just benefit my work life; it transformed my home life too. It taught me to voice concerns and to seek help for myself and my daughters. I became more open and confident.”

Victoria passed her functional skills English exam as part of the apprenticeship process and is currently working towards her functional skills maths qualification and end-point assessment.

She added: “I’m often an extra hand at work, assisting residents with complex needs and ensuring their wellbeing. I’ve learned to empower residents to achieve their best lifestyle while staying confident in my ability to meet their needs.

“From the tutors to the mentors, Realise offers everything you need to succeed. You just have to make the most of it.”

Realise’s Level 2 adult care worker apprenticeship is a 14-month programme including modules in tasks and responsibilities, duty of care and legal requirements.

Realise is one of the UK’s leading training providers, helping more than 16,500 learners every year.
