Discover how Sara transformed her career in Learning & Development
Why an Apprenticeship?
Sara was looking for a fresh career direction that matched her natural skills and personality. The apprenticeship offered a structured way to gain new skills and transition into Learning & Development.
“I wanted something completely new that felt right for me, not just another job. I could see this course as a chance to challenge myself, learn practical skills, and finally move into an area where I could thrive and enjoy what I do every day.”
A Career Journey
Sara has had a diverse career, from tech support and admin, to production planning and management, self-employment as a massage therapist, and being a stay-at-home mum. Joining AQA marked a turning point into a role more suited to her strengths and interests.
“I’ve tried lots of different things in my life, from structured office roles to running my own business. This feels like the first role that really fits who I am and allows me to use the skills I enjoy and the strengths I never really got to show before.”
Daily Life at Work
In her current role, Sara spends her day creating teaching and assessment resources for teachers, ensuring everything is accurate and consistent. Her apprenticeship skills have enhanced her confidence in tackling these tasks more efficiently.
“It’s detail-focused work, but now I approach it with a new sense of purpose and confidence. I feel I’m not just completing tasks—I’m actively improving processes and contributing to how the team works now and for the future.”
Favourite Part of the Course
The course was engaging, practical, and immediately applicable, helping Sara feel confident to make improvements at work. Her final project gave her visibility within the team and a chance to create a real impact.
“Seeing my ideas come to life and making a difference for the team was such a boost. It showed me that even small changes, when applied thoughtfully, can have a real impact on others and gave me confidence to take on bigger challenges.”
Life Before the Apprenticeship
Before starting the course, Sara had limited connections within her organisation. The apprenticeship allowed her to work closely with the L&D team and find a mentor in another department, giving her invaluable guidance and support.
“Having people to lean on and learn from made the whole journey feel achievable. It’s not just the course content- it’s the advice, encouragement, and feedback from others that really made the difference.”
Using Her New Skills
Sara now uses her skills daily, leading training initiatives and improving processes in her new role. She credits her tutor Nicki for the encouragement and support that helped her succeed despite personal and work challenges.
“I couldn’t have done this without my tutor. Her patience and guidance kept me going through everything. I started the course with no previous knowledge of L&D, Nicki helped me see how to apply the course content to my role, I followed her advice and finished the course with a distinction and an impactful work project completed.”
