Championing compassionate care: Peter's story

Peter Clark, a Support Worker from South Somerset embarked on a Level 3 Health & Social Care Diploma and has transformed his approach to family and professional care support.

Leading by example:

After 10 years of working in care and support roles, Peter felt compelled to ‘be the change’ after witnessing a lack of person-centred, compassionate and professional standards in previous care and support posts.

Mr Clark shared with Realise, that he wanted to “embody the best practices possible, provide the best care and outcomes” and ultimately – lead by example.

Helping people to live the best version of their lives:

We asked Peter what a typical day looks like as a Care Support Worker and what is clear to see, is that Peter is motivated by the opportunity to encourage and support his team and his residents to thrive personally and professionally.

Peter explained, “The people I support rely on me to help them live the best possible version of their lives, with kindness, compassion, dignity, respect, transparency and openness.”

“Every day is different, which provides a good challenge. Adaptability is a real key to the support and care I provide. I may find myself waking the people I support, helping them get ready and dress, helping them make breakfast and take their medications, helping them get around, helping them make and attend appointments, helping them cook meals and clean their homes, and more.”

What ‘great’ looks like in Health and Social Care:

When asked about his experience of the Level 3 Diploma, Peter told Realise that he enjoyed the easy-to-follow process of learning and has embraced the TRACK system, which has enabled Peter to reflect on his newfound knowledge and how it affects his practice.

With each module building upon the next, Peter described the programme structure and unitised delivery as “interweaving” eventually, creating “a full picture of what ‘great’ looks like in Health and Social Care”.

Personalised tutor support:

Here at Realise, our sector expert staff support learners on an individual basis to achieve the Level 3 Diploma.

Realise has highly skilled and knowledgeable staff with significant experience working in the industry. Learning can be individualised to suit the learner’s needs best, and that is exactly what Peter experienced.

Peter’s tutor, Claire structured his tuition in a way that he prefers to work, going the extra mile to help him succeed.

“When I began this course, I was nervous that the pace and style of learning might not suit the way my brain works as I am Autistic. But my tutor, Claire Thomson, has gone to great lengths to adapt my learning activities, journaling, observations, and professional discussions to suit the way I learn best.”

“I love working with Pete! He is so dedicated and so keen to learn. Pete writes the most amazing reflective learning journals. With Pete’s consent, I use his journals as an example of best practice with all of my other learners!”

A transformed view of care support:

Since embarking on his journey with Realise, Peter has re-defined his approach to care and is committed to sharing his knowledge – including areas he had not considered before.

“Without this course, I would have undoubtedly remained partly ignorant of some of the most important and detailed facets of care, such as the intricacies of data protection, the all-important 6 Cs of Care, and my potential for helping others learn to help themselves (enablement).

“I’ve taken to heart the core values of person-centred, compassionate care in my personal life too, which has helped me lead my family’s response to the ongoing decline in my parents’ physical and mental health. This has improved our interactions with the care home and medical professionals who are looking after my father’s care.”

A bright future:

Peter’s commitment and conviction to improving care standards is truly inspiring.

With his sights set on becoming a Lead Senior Support Worker in the future, we have every confidence that Peter will do what he set out to do and lead by example.

“I’m hoping to “be the change” that I’ve so desperately wanted to see in the care industry. My plan is to make a meaningful difference to the people I care for and their families.”
