Former stay-at-home mum now shining bright as a Teaching Assistant!

Topics

After 10 years of raising her four children, Katy embarked on a learning journey with Realise and has since secured employment with a local primary school.

A fresh start:

Mum of four, Katy from Liverpool had lost all of her confidence when it came to applying for jobs. After 10 years of being a stay-at-home mum, Katy was tired of being ‘unemployed and undervalued.’

Armed with plenty of experience and extensive childcare skills Katy was ready to pursue a new career as a Teaching Assistant.

Having previously worked as a Neighbourhood Housing Officer in her local authority and then at a housing association, Katy knew that she didn’t want to return to that career path. With the help of an employment coach from the Salvation Army, Katy was recommended Realise as a route forward toward a new career in the classroom.

Katy completed not one but TWO courses with Realise that helped her secure a dream job as a Teaching Assistant:

  • Level 1 Short Course in Preparing to Work in Schools
  • Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools & Colleges

Katy’s progression path with Realise:

Starting her journey with a Level 1 short course in Preparing to Work in Schools, Katy sought to enhance her understanding of the school environment and learn about the roles and responsibilities schools play as an organisation.

Over 7 weeks, Katy discovered what it is like to work in a school and the variety of different phases that are crucial to succeed in education.

Having confirmed her calling to become a Teaching Assistant, Katy went on to complete her Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges. During this course, Katy was able to specialise her training and learn about how to support the children in her care, gaining the skills to enable them to get the most out of their teaching.

From fear to flourishing:

When Katy first enrolled, she was nervous – but these fears soon subsided when she met her trainer Lindsey.

Lindsey put her at ease within minutes and ensured that if she didn’t know something, that was okay! Lindsey knew just how to encourage Katy to draw upon her newfound skills and knowledge in a way that made her feel confident and secure.

Lindsey provided support every week, adapting her teaching style to help Katy achieve her goals and work to her maximum potential. Over time, Lindsey helped Katy develop into a capable and confident individual bursting with enthusiasm and passion that she could take forward into a Teaching Assistant role.

“I am truly grateful to Lindsey for giving me the confidence and encouragement to complete the course and get a job as a Teaching Assistant. I found her experience and knowledge of the job invaluable and loved listening to her work experiences as a Teaching Assistant.”

We asked Katy’s Trainer Lindsey, to see what she had to say:

“Katy was a lovely student, always ready to learn and gave 100% every lesson. She was nurturing and supportive to her peers and had the perfect attributes to take forward into any educational setting. I am so proud to have been part of her learning journey.”

Katy’s new life as a Teaching Assistant:

After completing the 2 courses, Katy successfully secured employment as a Teaching Assistant in a local primary school.

Katy is now responsible for helping children with their daily tasks during lessons occasionally marks the children’s work and teaches subjects like phonics and art.

Katy is particularly proud of the one-to-one support she now provides to a child with special educational needs. Adapting lessons and utilising the sensory room are all techniques Katy employs to support the child and ensure they still receive an enriching learning experience.

“I love teaching children and that each day is different. The children teach me new skills I didn’t know I had!”

What a fantastic result for Katy!
