From loss to purpose: Sally’s Level 3 Diploma journey

After sadly losing a family member, Sally pursued a career in adult care. A Level 3 Diploma has brought a greater understanding of her role and solidified her career goals for the future.

A new calling:

Sally Chance, a Healthcare Assistant from Wednesbury in the West Midlands embarked on a Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker Diploma with Realise to help propel her career forwards.

After starting out in clerical roles, Sally took a small break from employment to become a full-time carer for a family member. Following their unfortunate passing, Sally felt compelled to continue her caring role and entered the world of health and social care.

Person-centered care – always:

As a Healthcare Assistant at Friendly Care, Sally told Realise that every day is different, with no two days being the same! A typical day for Sally includes attending morning handover and then completing her morning checks of her assigned section – including taking breakfast orders and helping each service user with their unique needs. After breakfast orders are completed and documented accordingly, Sally pairs up with another team member to complete all personal care needs, including assisting those who cannot assist themselves.

After lunch is finished, Sally will commence pad checks and more personal care for those who have chosen to get up later than others. Evening tea is served and then Sally will conduct personal care for those who choose to retire to their beds or those who are nursed in bed. As well as this, Sally performs routine medical observations and reports any concerns to the nurse in charge.

What is clear when listening to Sally, is the pride she takes in her steadfast commitment to delivering person-centered care.

“Everything, EVERYTHING, is performed in a person-centered way and documented at all times.”

A reminder of her valuable role:

The Level 3 Diploma presented a compelling opportunity to Sally whereby she could expand her skill sets and add more knowledge and understanding to her role. Sally’s hunger to progress and access even more learning after completing the diploma is inspiring.

When asked what Sally would be doing if she hadn’t embarked on the diploma, she said “I would still be doing the same role, however, I feel with fewer skills, qualifications and understanding of the importance of the job.”

“Learning new skills has reminded me just how important the role I do is.”
