Route to Success bus driver boot-camp in Greater Manchester celebrates its first success.

Aleem Haider, aged 43, has just passed his PCV (passenger carrying vehicle) licence test, making him the first learner to complete the Manchester Route to Success skills boot-camp.

About Aleem

Aleem was a self-employed heating and plumbing engineer for more the 20 years, Aleem decided to sign up for the free Route to Success training course, run by leading training provider Realise on behalf of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

After completing the course, which covers both the theory and practical elements of learning to drive a bus, Aleem is now qualified and has secured a job with a bus company that operates school buses and similar services.

Aleem, who lives in Manchester, talked about the course saying

“I’m really glad I decided to do the training course.”

“I’ve a friend who drives buses and he was always telling me to do it, so when I saw the advert in June, I decided I would apply.

“It was really good and on the practical side, the instructor Kenny, who has many years’ experience, helped me to pass, thanks to all of his advice, tips and guidance.

“My family are really proud that I’ve done the course and I’m looking forward to getting started in my new role, doing something different, being around people and enjoying something new. I’d recommend anyone who has thought about applying for the Route to Success programme to just go for it. You won’t regret it.”

About the course

The fully-funded ‘Route to Success’ training programme, which aims to provide a regional solution to the nationwide bus driver shortage, is designed to offer a new career opportunity for anyone aged 19 and over with a full UK driving licence.

No previous experience is needed and learners who complete the Skills Bootcamp will become a qualified bus driver in a maximum of 16 weeks. The course includes medical assessments, theory and hazard practice and test, on-road driving and customer service.

A total of 112 new bus drivers are to be created initially, with each learner completing the course guaranteed a job interview with a local bus provider.

Kairon Flowers, Operations Director at Realise, said:

“We’re thrilled Aleem is the first to successfully complete the bus driver Skills Bootcamp, which will open up a new career pathway for him. Our learners are developing new skills that will enable them to fill valuable and much-needed driver roles across the region.

“The beauty of this programme is that bus drivers can expect 38-hours guaranteed contracts and job security. For many people, it is an excellent opportunity to move away from the uncertainty of zero-hours contracts.”

Realise has implemented the Route to Success programme in other regions, including West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire, but this is the first time it has been delivered through the government’s Skills Bootcamp initiative.
