Honouring his mum’s legacy: Kumar’s path into adult care

Honouring his mum’s legacy: Kumar’s path into adult care

A career change driven by personal loss, leading to a new purpose in care.

 A passion for helping others

Kumar Bulathwela is a dedicated carer at Westminster Homecare, providing essential support to those in need. His journey into the care industry was deeply personal, inspired by the passing of his mother.

“After her death, I decided to spend more and more time with elderly and vulnerable people who need help and support,” he shares. Before this life-changing event, Kumar had spent over 30 years in a completely different profession, making his transition into care all the more remarkable.

A typical day for Kumar

Kumar’s day begins with attending to his client’s needs, from preparing breakfast to assisting with washing, dressing, and ensuring their living space is tidy.

But beyond the physical tasks, it’s the human connection that he cherishes most. “Chatting about daily news and listening to their good old days’ stories brightens up my day,” he says.

Asked about his most enjoyable days, Kumar recalls the moments when his clients find happiness and resilience. “There are more than a few days I enjoy.  When my clients laugh and take things easily and bravely,” he says. These moments reaffirm his passion for his role.

Kumar’s path to an Apprenticeship

Kumar had already been working as a carer when his manager encouraged him to pursue further qualifications.

This led him to an apprenticeship with Realise, which he describes as “tremendous and very supportive.” Reflecting on his training, Kumar wanted to personally thank his trainer, Felistas who worked closely with him to achieve the qualification

Overcoming challenges

Kumar’s journey was not without its difficulties. His trainer, Felistas recalls: “When I started supporting Kumar, he was really behind. Kumar and myself hit the ground running from day one as I was able to do an individualised learning plan to meet his needs.”

Kumar faced additional learning challenges, requiring additional support with using a computer. “Kumar was also identified as needing help with his ICT skills, and I got him all the support he needed and we created SMART objectives using our Achievement Recovery Plan.”

Despite these challenges, Kumar’s determination never wavered.

Compassionate care

For Kumar, the greatest joy in his work comes from offering comfort and companionship. “I enjoy giving and sharing things they don’t have or are greatly missing – listening to them, appreciating them, and showing them how important they are in this world.”

The impact Kumar has on his clients is never to be underestimated and demonstrates the unwavering compassion he possesses.

Person centered care

Kumar’s journey into care has been one of dedication, learning, and deep personal connection. Through his apprenticeship and daily work at Westminster Homecare, he continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those he supports.
