Learning for a better future, for me and my children

After over a decade of working in retail, Louise decided it was time for a change. While she'd always worked hard and juggled family life, she wanted something more, something that would not only help her progress in her career but also allow her to support her children better. That's when she found Realise and took the first step towards gaining her Functional Skills qualification in Maths.

Looking for something more

After working in childcare for a short time, followed by 12 years in retail, Louise felt it was time for a change. She was ready to explore new skills and find a career path that she could truly enjoy. “I’m now looking to learn new skills to find a new career I can be more passionate about,” she shared.

Finding Realise

Wanting to gain a qualification that would open new doors and help support her children with their education, she turned to the internet for options. A quick search led her to Realise. “I googled it, and I wanted to get my Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths to hopefully open up better opportunities and also to support my children through their schooling.”

Starting the journey

At the time, she was still working in retail. Taking on the course was a big step, and like many learners, she had a mix of feelings on day one. “Nervous but excited and positive,” she said.

Enjoying the process

As she got into the rhythm of learning again, she found real joy in the process, especially when using the Skills Builder tools and meeting with her tutor. “I loved the Skills Builder, and I really enjoyed learning. I looked forward to meetings with Jennifer as she always explained things so I could understand.”

The impact of learning

The course didn’t just build her Maths skills, it gave her a boost in confidence and motivation to keep going with her learning journey. “It made me feel so much more positive and really keen to learn more. Made me feel like anything I want to learn would be achievable.”

Kind words for others

When asked what she’d say to someone thinking about doing a course with Realise, she didn’t hesitate. “Do it, it’s the best thing you can do.”

Supportive teaching that makes a difference

She also had high praise for her tutor, who played a big role in making learning feel accessible and enjoyable. “Jennifer was a great tutor, she was very knowledgeable, understanding and always explained things in a way I could understand.”

With a new sense of confidence and a growing passion for learning, Louise now sees the future differently. What started as a simple search online has become a turning point, opening up new opportunities and proving that it’s never too late to start something new.
