Natasha’s diploma experience as a neurodivergent Nursery Assistant

Topics

Natasha, a disabled and neurodiverse Nursery Assistant from Leeds, was offered the opportunity to achieve a level 3 diploma and is now striving to create an inclusive learning environment.

The perfect next step:

Since leaving school, Natasha explored a variety of career paths that combined her passion for education with her strong sense of creativity – before finding part-time work as bank staff for 22 Street Lane Nursery in Leeds.

Natasha suffers from Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) which is a neurological condition affecting the nervous system. The condition causes Natasha to feel extreme fatigue – affecting her physical and mental abilities on a daily basis.

As a Nursery Assistant, Natasha’s role is a blend of caregiving, cleaning, and facilitating engaging activities for the children. Her day begins with assisting during lunch, where she serves meals, cleans plates, and tidies the dining area, followed by helping to settle the children for nap time.

Afterwards, Natasha handles everything from nappy changes to preparing healthy snacks and spends the afternoon engaging the children in activities such as games, crafts, stories, and songs, as well as supervising outdoor play. Later, she assists during dinner, cleans and organises the classroom and outdoor areas, and supports the children as they wait for their guardians while another staff member prepares for the next day.

Natasha’s passion for education and her unique perspective as a neurodiverse and disabled individual helped shape her vision for inclusivity and was a driving force in accepting her employer’s offer to achieve the Level 3 Diploma with Realise.

“Teaching has always felt incredibly fulfilling to me, and while I initially planned to stay as bank staff, the opportunity to gain a formal qualification was too valuable to pass up.”

Tailored to Natasha’s needs:

Due to her disability, it was important that Natasha could manage her studies carefully whilst on the diploma programme and ensure she did not over-exert herself.

To support Natasha’s learning journey and unique needs, Realise provided a flexible and supportive approach.

Natasha’s trainer Rachael worked with her to create a structured and individualised learning plan that included breaking down assessments into manageable steps so that Natasha felt comfortable with her assignments.

With Rachael’s unwavering support, Natasha was able to overcome her obstacles and maintain motivation whilst completing the programme.

“Natasha sometimes struggled with her confidence, especially with her being bank staff and with her disabilities, she was quite hard on herself. Natasha always put in 100% effort with everything – it was just getting over those little hurdles that allowed her to believe in herself!”

Rachael Turner, Trainer

“It did take me a bit longer to complete the qualification due to my disability, but I had an incredibly supportive tutor, Rachael, who made the journey manageable and stress-free. She was always understanding and flexible, accommodating any extra time I needed or rescheduling discussions when necessary.”

Deepened understanding of Early Years education:

During the course, Natasha particularly enjoyed taking a research-driven approach to each topic area covered within the curriculum, which included delving into the intricacies of child development and the needs of neurodivergent children.

Natasha explained:

“I loved how the course was structured to be open and adaptable, allowing me to conduct research and learn at my own pace. The freedom to explore topics in a way that worked for me made the experience fantastic.”

“Being neurodivergent myself, I found it incredibly meaningful to learn about how to support neurodivergent children, and I’ve been able to apply this knowledge directly in my nursery role, helping to create a more accessible and enjoyable experience for every child.”

The impact:

Since completing the qualification, Natasha has felt empowered to no longer work as bank staff and is transitioning to working 4 days a week from January 2025.

Now, I work three days a week in my favourite room with 1-2-year-olds, and starting in January 2025, I’ll be increasing to four days a week. This is something I’ve never been able to do before due to my disabilities, but having a consistent routine has made a huge difference. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in this role!”

By offering a flexible and personalised approach whilst on the programme, Natasha has also gained a clearer sense of direction for her early years career.

“While I spent the first half of my qualification working with older children, my final observation in the 1-2 year-old class really solidified my passion for working with that age group.”

“I understand that this age group can be challenging, especially with the onset of the “terrible twos,” but I thrive on creating strategies that make learning fun and effective.”

Lastly, since completing the programme Natasha feels closer than ever to her colleagues at 22 Street Lane Nursery, including one of her managers called Shoshanna or ‘Shosh’ for short. Natasha felt that Shosh was an incredible support and mentor to her throughout her journey.

“Shosh has been amazing. Her understanding and encouragement have been pivotal in helping me navigate my disabilities at work and I feel her contribution deserves some recognition in my story.”

Bursting with pride:

Despite over 250,000 people in the UK living with ME/CFS, Natasha hopes to raise awareness and show others in similar situations that it’s possible to work and thrive when you have the right support system around you.

Natasha is a positive role model, not only for the neurodiverse and disabled children in her care but for all prospective learners who have ever questioned their capability of achieving great things.

A huge well done to Natasha.

“Completing the course gave me a real boost in confidence, and I feel genuinely proud of what I’ve achieved. It was a meaningful accomplishment that has left me feeling more capable and excited for the future.”
