A scheme which has trained more than 100 new bus drivers in Greater Manchester has been extended to create dozens more.

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority last year appointed one of the UK’s leading training providers, Realise, to run its Route to Success initiative.

112 learners completed

A total of 112 learners have either completed or are currently going through the programme – which takes a maximum of 16 weeks to complete – and are taking their first steps towards a new career.

The Authority has now given the green light for a further 60 learners to be trained in an extension to the scheme.

The course, which is hosted at the Realise Skills Hub based at Rochdale Football Club’s Crown Oil Arena, is open to any individual aged over 19 and with a full UK driving licence.

Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, said: “Not only is the Bee Network transforming public transport across Greater Manchester, it is creating jobs for local people.

“One of the benefits of bringing buses under local control is that we’ve been able to introduce more frequent services – and we need more drivers to run them.

“Having people with the right skills as we build the Bee Network is vital and Realise is helping to meet a growing demand by providing operators with drivers who are ready to take to our streets, providing a critical service in helping people get around Greater Manchester.”

Route to Success programme

The Route to Success programme sees learners delivered training in all aspects of driving a bus including medical assessments, theory and hazard practice and test, on-road driving and customer service.

As well as obtaining a Passenger Carrying Vehicle licence through the course, those completing the programme will also be guaranteed a job interview with an operator in Greater Manchester.

Kairon Flowers, Operations Director at Realise, said: “The first phase of the training programme in Greater Manchester has been a huge success and we are delighted that the provision has been extended.

“The demand for new bus drivers, not only in Manchester but right across the UK, remains extremely high and we are seeing increasing interest in our Route to Success programme as local authorities take steps to help protect future bus services for local communities.

“For people seeking a new challenge and thinking bus driving may be an option they are keen to pursue, it’s an ideal opportunity to progress into a new career and acquire all the skills they require to be a huge success.”
