Jessica studied English to become a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant

When a year's medical leave paused her career, Jessica Robertshaw saw it as an opportunity to invest in herself. She wanted to gain her English qualification with help from Realise to progress in her career and achieve her dream of becoming a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HTLA).

Beginning

Starting as a lunchtime supervisory assistant, Jessica later took on roles as a Casual Learning Support Assistant and a Senior Care Assistant. However, her heart was always drawn back to education, which led her to secure a full-time role as a Teaching Assistant.

Finding Realise

A simple Google search introduced Jessica to Realise. The programme’s reputation for providing quality training and support resonated with her goals. She was drawn to the idea of a learning environment that could help her build confidence and overcome personal challenges. “I want to gain my English qualification for career progression,” she explained.

Jessica’s highlights

For Jessica, the most rewarding aspect of the training has been her supportive tutor, Angie. She describes Angie as “amazing,” noting her ability to make the lessons both professional and comfortable. Angie’s encouragement and understanding have been key to boosting Jessica’s confidence. “Angie is the best thing about this course,” Jessica says, adding that the entire staff at Realise have been fantastic, from enrolment to weekly lessons.

Impact and future goals

Gaining her English qualification is a significant milestone for Jessica. It represents more than just career progression; it’s a personal achievement 12 years in the making. “To know I have done it, even if I am 12 years late, is a huge achievement for me.” Jessica shared. These qualifications will open doors for her to become a HLTA and showcase her determination and resilience.

Since completing the course, Jessica has successfully secured a new role with a pay rise and earned a Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification. With her Maths qualification being the final step, she is on track to achieving her HLTA status and advancing her career further.

Jessica wholeheartedly recommends Realise to anyone considering a course. She highlights the approachable and friendly staff, straightforward lessons, and the supportive environment among tutors and fellow learners. “There’s no need for dread,” she assures others.
