A twist and turn toward a career in care: Roger's Story

A twist and turn toward a career in care: Roger's Story

Roger’s journey into adult care celebrates the diverse and rich mix of people the sector brings together.

Introducing Roger

Roger Teague is a Senior Care Support Worker at Continuum Care in Truro, Cornwall. Continuum Care provides essential support services to adults and children living in their own homes across Cornwall. The organisation works closely with individuals, families, and support networks to ensure people with a wide range of physical and mental health conditions can live fulfilling, independent lives safely at home.

Pathway to Adult Care

Roger’s journey into adult social care is both diverse and inspiring. With a professional background that spans hospitality and real estate, Roger made a significant career transition into the care sector.

"I was a head chef for a hotel, then moved into real estate before working in the care sector" he shares.

“I got into adult care via a family member, who thought I might be a good candidate due to my personality and previous job roles; they felt I could make a difference."

Now, he supports adults with learning disabilities, Down syndrome, autism, and mental health conditions - roles that demand compassion, adaptability, and a strong sense of purpose.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

Roger’s role as a senior care worker is multifaceted. He is responsible for rota management, medication administration and auditing, financial monitoring, personal care, meaningful occupation planning, health and safety compliance, and more. He also handles operational matters like monitoring staff sickness and processing return-to-work documentation.

Beyond administrative tasks, Roger is deeply committed to team development:

"In my day-to-day job, I enjoy helping my team better their knowledge and skills."

This highlights his natural leadership and commitment to continuous improvement - not just for himself, but for those around him.

Why the Level 4 Lead Practitioner in Adult Care Apprenticeship?

Motivated by a desire to grow professionally and improve the quality of care he provides, Roger embarked on the Level 4 Lead Practitioner in Adult Care Apprenticeship.

"As a senior, I wanted to expand my knowledge in the care sector, to be able to do my job to the best of my ability," he explains.

Roger found the learning experience highly beneficial. “I enjoyed the learning, and it helped me build my confidence,” he says. The apprenticeship has shaped his approach to complex aspects of care, particularly around legal and ethical frameworks.

Throughout the programme, Roger was supported by his dedicated Trainer, Lyn. At the beginning of his journey, Lyn collaborated with Roger to understand his learning style and how to help get him back on track, after a few setbacks.

Lyn continues – “Roger met every goal and objective I set to him. Whilst working with me, Roger was able to demonstrate his knowledge, skills and behaviours and showcase these within his end point assessment (EPA) observation and professional discussion.

I am so proud of how hard Roger has worked to achieve his award. He has been committed to his qualifications and always wanted to learn more. I want to wish Roger all the very best in his career.”

Developing Professional Knowledge and Confidence

One of the key areas where Roger is seeing growth is his understanding of restrictions and legal responsibilities. He reflects:

"I now understand the reasons why we do things in a certain way – i.e. using restriction – so it’s understanding DOLS, capacity, risk association and the rationale behind why restrictions have been implemented and also who has the authority."

This depth of understanding is crucial in his work, where safeguarding and advocacy are central.

 Looking Ahead

As Roger completes his Level 4 apprenticeship, he continues to build the knowledge and confidence necessary for high-level practice in adult care.

“For me personally, I do find my job very rewarding, especially when you can see you’re making a difference, nothing can be better than that.”

Roger’s story is a testament to the value of career development and the powerful impact of dedicated professionals in the care sector.

Well done Roger.
