Developing confident leadership through apprenticeship learning

Developing confident leadership through apprenticeship learning

Two women

With a passion for nurturing young minds, Fae Coleman, the Nursery Manager at Family First has taken an exciting step forward by completing her Level 5 specialist apprenticeship in early years. Already qualified at a Level 3 and successfully leading a full-day nursery, she wanted an opportunity to deepen her knowledge.

Fae said, “I’ve always had a passion for learning. I’m constantly researching the EYFS, child development, brain development, trauma, pedagogy and theorists. The apprenticeship felt like the right way to bring all of that learning together.”

Growing as a leader

Fae viewed the apprenticeship as a way to build on existing experience. It provided space to step back, reflect and think more critically about leadership and decision-making within the nursery.

“The training helped me articulate what I was already doing more confidently. It encouraged me to think more deeply about why we use certain approaches, not just how we use them.”

The apprenticeship offered structured learning alongside her day-to-day role, helping Fae evaluate her current practice, reinforce what was working well and identify where theory could further strengthen leadership and outcomes.

Connection, collaboration and impact

A key strength of the apprenticeship was its relevance to everyday work. Fae valued how theory and reflection were directly linked to real situations in her setting. Although her work is busy and varies, starting early with health and safety checks, daily huddles, team check-ins and parent engagement, the apprenticeship helped her view these routines through a more reflective lens.

“The training I received from Realise has been highly valuable in developing my professional knowledge and reflective practice. In particular, the focus on theorists and pedagogy deepened my understanding of the theoretical foundations that underpin early years practice. It supported me in thinking differently about my role. I became more confident in how I make decisions and how I lead the team."

Developing confident, reflective leadership skills

One of the most impactful areas of the apprenticeship was exploring leadership styles and coaching.

“It also supported me in evaluating current practice, reinforcing effective strategies, and identifying areas where theory could further inform and strengthen decision-making and leadership within the nursery. As a result, I have become more intentional in adapting my leadership approach and using coaching strategies to support, challenge, and empower team members more effectively.”

Making a lasting difference

The apprenticeship has also influenced how Fae supports others as she now places greater value on reflection, connection and shared understanding within the team. A standout moment came during a team meeting focused on individual vision boards, where staff shared personal and professional goals.

  • “The process encouraged open discussion and reflection, and I was particularly struck by the level of honesty and vulnerability the team demonstrated when sharing factors that had been holding them back, alongside their ideas and aspirations for the year ahead. This experience reinforced my understanding of the importance of dedicating time to connection and reflective dialogue as a leader.”

Advice for others

For Fae, the Level 5 apprenticeship has been about growth, confidence and purposeful leadership.

She shared, “To anyone thinking about starting an apprenticeship, I would encourage them to go for it. You are never too far removed from education to start learning again, and you are never too old to develop new skills or deepen your understanding.

Learning is invaluable, and while an apprenticeship can be demanding and requires a high level of commitment and dedication, the rewards are significant. The personal growth, increased confidence, and professional development gained make the experience so worthwhile.”
