Growing confidence through collaboration and support: Samantha’s SENCO course journey

Joining the SEN Coordinator Skills Bootcamp (SENCO) course proved to be a meaningful and confidence building experience for Samantha Bray. The course offered both new knowledge and fresh ways of thinking about her practice.

“The course expanded my knowledge in areas I was unfamiliar with. It also showed me different ways of conducting observation and assessments, compared to how I’ve done them before.” 

Learning together

One of the most valuable aspects of the course was learning alongside other professionals. Hearing different perspectives helped reinforce that there is no single right way to approach practice.

Samantha said, “Learning from my fellow students has been truly insightful. Even when we were working on the same task, everyone had their unique approach. That really inspired new ideas for my own practice.”

This collaborative learning environment encouraged reflection and improvement for Samantha and for their wider team. She plans to conduct this approach forward by sharing learning with new staff members. This will help ensure that everyone understands processes and works towards shared goals.

Supportive teaching that builds confidence

Samantha spoke highly of her tutors and the way the sessions were delivered. Each session was thorough and well-paced, with plenty of time given to absorb information and ask questions.

“The tutors helped build my confidence. They always responded constructively, even when my answers weren’t quite right or my explanations were incomplete."

She also valued how inclusive the sessions felt. Every learner was encouraged to take part, ensuring no one felt overlooked. 

“During breakout rooms, it was beneficial that tutors were able to join and encourage engagement from all participants.”

Ongoing guidance beyond sessions

Support didn’t stop when sessions ended. Samantha found reassurance in knowing her tutors were available in the background to offer guidance while completing learning logs and workbook. More so, she added:

“I found it beneficial that I could contact the tutors via email regarding confidential matters prior to each session, and they responded with understanding.”

Looking ahead

 Reflecting on the experience, the learner felt the course offered a deeper and more comprehensive experience than others she has taken before.

“I strongly recommend this course to anyone interested in the SENCO role. The level of support, professionalism and care from the tutors has made a real difference.”
