Discover how Simon transformed his leadership career in Learning & Development
- 👤 Name: Simon Trundle
- 🏢 Employer: United Response
- 🎓 Apprenticeship: Level 5 Learning & Development Consultant
- 💼 Job Title: L&D Manager
Why an Apprenticeship?
Simon’s current role is strategic, overseeing Learning & Development across United Response. The Level 5 apprenticeship was a requirement of his job, providing the theoretical knowledge to complement his practical experience and to better understand how L&D aligns with organisational goals.
“The qualification has really helped me understand the role of L&D in the wider organisation, the factors that affect it, and how to deliver interventions effectively.”
A Career Journey
Simon’s career has been varied. He started as an assistant playleader, spent many years as a licensed trade stock auditor, and has now worked over 20 years in health and social care, progressing from support worker to management roles, and eventually becoming an L&D Manager.
“I’ve had quite a few different careers, and each role has contributed to my understanding of people, processes, and learning in different ways.”
Daily Life at Work
Simon’s day-to-day work is varied and strategic. While he occasionally delivers face-to-face training to support workers, most sessions are now delivered via TEAMS to managers and non-operational staff. His role also involves regular team reviews, quality assurance through observing training delivery, and numerous meetings with key stakeholders.
“There really isn’t a typical day! It’s a mix of training, planning, reviewing, and collaborating with my team and colleagues across the organisation.”
Favourite Part of the Course
Simon particularly enjoyed learning about the different models that underpin Learning & Development planning and delivery. Engaging with other apprentices also gave him a chance to share ideas, gain new perspectives, and reflect on his own practice.
“I really valued exploring the many L&D models and seeing how they can shape planning and delivery. Sharing ideas with other apprentices was a highlight – it gave me fresh ways to approach challenges.”
Using His New Skills
Since completing the apprenticeship, Simon has applied his learning to improve planning, liaising with stakeholders, and thinking strategically about post-training implementation. The course has helped him bridge theory and practice, strengthening the impact of L&D across the organisation.
“I’m now looking more closely at how we implement learning after training, ensuring it sticks and delivers real change. The apprenticeship has given me the tools to plan and work more effectively with key stakeholders.”
Simon’s journey demonstrates how combining practical experience with formal learning can enhance strategic thinking, improve organisational impact, and elevate the role of L&D.
