From school leaver to award-winning apprentice with Grandir UK

From overcoming anxiety and self-doubt to becoming an award-winning apprentice, Annie Griggs has proven that with the right support and determination anything is possible!

The best route forward

For Annie Griggs from Hitchin, the decision to pursue an apprenticeship straight after school was an easy one. She knew that a hands-on learning environment, combined with the ability to earn while developing her skills, was the best option for her.

“I chose to go straight into an apprenticeship after school as I felt this was the best way for me to learn a new skill and earn at the same time.”

“School wasn’t the right environment for me, so I thought an apprenticeship was the way for me.”

Excelling in early years education

At just 16, Annie took the bold step of entering the world of work as an apprentice Nursery Practitioner with GrandirUK, one of the UK’s leading childcare providers. Since then, she has gone from strength to strength. Having successfully completed her Level 2 Apprenticeship with a Distinction, she is now progressing through her Level 3.

Annie’s hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed. Annie has received numerous awards for her commitment to early years education, including the Apprentice of the Year award from Realise.

Gemma Hughes, Partnerships Manager at Realise was reminded just how powerful an apprenticeship can be when she travelled to hand deliver Annie’s award in February.

“One of the most rewarding moments in my journey was presenting the Apprentice of the Year and Runner-Up awards for Grandir UK during National Apprenticeship Week. Celebrating not only those who have overcome challenges but also those who truly shine in this environment.”

A day in the life of an Apprentice Nursery Practitioner

No two days are the same for Annie. Working in a nursery requires adaptability, teamwork, and patience. From changing nappies and following sleep routines to managing mealtimes and setting up engaging activities, she plays a vital role in the children’s daily development.

“A day at the nursery for me is always different. Children are unpredictable – sometimes they’re happy, and other times they’re unwell. You have to be prepared for anything to happen during the workday. I greet parents and hand over to them about how their child is and how their day was.”

“Working in a nursery is about teamwork – we all chip in and help each other. Some days go smoothly, and others are harder, but together we all make it work.”

Discovering a passion for child development

Through both her Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships with Realise, Annie has developed a deep interest in child development, particularly the science behind how children grow and learn.

“I have loved learning about the development of children from birth to seven years old, how the brain works, the signals it is sending, and at what speed a child should be progressing. It is all so interesting to me and something we are never told about as young people.”

Proving doubters wrong

Annie’s journey has not been without its obstacles.

Throughout school, Annie struggled with severe anxiety, which affected her attendance and led to discouraging comments from teachers. However, through her apprenticeship and the support of her Assessor Kerry, she has not only built her skills but also regained her confidence.

“Annie was initially very shy and did not have confidence in her abilities. I discussed the course with her and showed her how she could manage her studies and work.”

Kerry Harrison, Assesor

“I was told from a young age at school that I wouldn’t achieve anything because of my attendance. I struggled with severe anxiety and found it difficult to be there most days. Teachers spoke about me negatively and had a lack of belief in me.”

Annie Griggs

“Annie told me that she had not had a great time at school and has since had a diagnosis of ADHD. I was able to arrange extra time for Annie to complete her EPA and throughout the course we discussed the best way to work together to help Annie achieve her aims.”

“But now, I look back at what I have achieved – 6 GCSEs, a Distinction in my Level 2 Apprenticeship, multiple awards, both regional and national nominations in the childcare world – and I know I’ve proved everyone wrong. Without the choice of an apprenticeship, I really don’t know where I’d be now.”

Looking to the future

Annie has ambitious career aspirations. After completing her Level 3 Apprenticeship qualification, she hopes to become a Room Leader in her setting. Looking further ahead, she is considering pursuing an apprenticeship in speech and language therapy, an area she has developed a keen interest in.

Annie credits much of her success to the support she has received from Realise.

“I am so thankful for the Realise team and all of the support I am being given.”

Annie’s Assessor, Kerry is confident that she will go on to do great things once she has got the Level 3 under her belt.

“I think starting with the Level 2 has given Annie a fantastic introduction to higher education and work-based training and has set her on course to achieve her Level 3 (fingers crossed for another Distinction!)”
