Realise helps Lyndsey get back on track to becoming a train driver

Realise's Functional Skills Maths course helped Lyndsey Rossiter take the next step towards a new career as a train driver for Avanti West Coast.

Taking the first step towards a new career

Despite being in full-time employment, Lyndsey Rossiter found herself needing a maths qualification to take the next step toward her goal of becoming a train driver for Avanti West Coast.

The solution? A maths course with Realise was recommended to her by Avanti.

Overcoming first-day nerves

Having left school 30 years ago, stepping back into a learning environment was a daunting prospect. Lyndsey recalls feeling “very nervous” on her first day, unsure of what to expect. However, the supportive atmosphere created by her tutor, Jenny, and the camaraderie among fellow learners quickly put her at ease.

Enjoying the learning jouney

Throughout the course, Lyndsey found herself enjoying not only the learning but also the interaction with her peers and Jenny’s teaching style. She describes Jenny as “very encouraging and positive,” always willing to go the extra mile to support her students. Whether it was checking answers with other tutors to ensure accuracy or providing extra guidance outside the classroom, Jenny’s approach made all the difference.

A qualification that opens doors

With her maths qualification in hand, Lyndsey is now fully equipped to pursue her new career as a train driver, having already passed all the necessary assessments and interviews, she is now ready to begin the formal training courses provided by Avanti. Reflecting on her journey, she says, “Without Jenny’s guidance and support, I honestly believe I wouldn’t have gained my qualification.”

Encouraging others to take the leap

Lyndsey is already paying it forward by encouraging her colleagues to consider taking up similar opportunities with Realise. “It was so simple to enrol and complete,” she explains, though she acknowledges the timing hasn’t been right for them just yet.

A heartfelt thank you

As she embarks on this exciting new chapter, Lyndsey is full of gratitude, saying, “Thank you to Realise for giving me the opportunity to complete my maths qualification, and a massive thank you to Jenny.”

“My qualification will enable me to pursue a career as a train driver. I had already passed all the assessments and interviews but needed my maths qualification to pursue this new career move.”
