Building confidence  and expertise: Joanna’s SEND Skills Bootcamp  experience

Building confidence  and expertise: Joanna’s SEND Skills Bootcamp  experience

Joanna Benko, an early year’s practitioner working across multiple nursery settings in London,
recently completed the SEN Coordinator Skills Bootcamp. For Joanna, this wasn’t just a
course - it was a reaffirmation of her values and dedication to supporting children with special
educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Supporting children with SEND has always been central to her role - and her identity.
“It’s not just a job for me; it’s part of who I am.”

Reflecting, researching and growing

The course encouraged Joanna to reflect critically on her own practice. She welcomed the
challenge of diving into legislation, exploring inclusive pedagogy, and thinking more deeply
about how to embed meaningful change.

“It pushed me to research further and think more deeply about what I do and why I do it.”

Through this process, she recognised the strengths already present in her work while
discovering ways to refine and build on them.

“It helped me recognise how much I already do - and how to strengthen that even more.”

Real-time application across settings

Working across several nurseries, Joanna valued the practical nature of the course. She was
able to apply what she was learning immediately, making the experience even more relevant
and impactful.

“Each module connected directly to my day-to-day work.”

Growing into a confident leader

One of the most significant outcomes for Joanna was gaining a stronger, clearer vision of her
leadership role in SEND provision. She now feels more confident supporting her team, working
in genuine partnership with families, and ensuring that practice is consistently inclusive and
child-centred, saying “I’ve come away with a clearer vision of how I want to lead.”

Encouragement and validation

Tutor feedback was particularly meaningful for Joanna. The recognition of her effort and
passion helped reinforce her belief in the work she does every day.

“Knowing that my passion came through meant a lot.”

Looking ahead with purpose

Joanna completed the course with a renewed sense of confidence, clarity, and purpose. She
continues to lead with empathy and intention, committed to building inclusive environments
where all children can thrive.

“I’m leaving this course with more confidence, more knowledge, and a deeper sense
of purpose.”
