From learner to tutor: How Realise helped Joanne build a new career

From learner to tutor: How Realise helped Joanne build a new career

After being made redundant, Joanne, a former Early Years professional, decided to turn an unexpected change into an opportunity. Having worked in roles such as restaurant manager, retail manager, NVQ assessor, childminder, early years practitioner and SENCo, Joanne wanted to continue her own career development. That's when she discovered Realise.

"I was made redundant, and on my local Facebook page, I saw a post for a Teaching Assistant course at a local community centre. I wanted to continue my own career development and was not working, so perfect timing to be able to attend."

Taking the first step
Before starting her course, Joanne was working as a deputy manager and SENCo in an early years setting. Even with years of experience, she felt nervous on her first day.

"I was nervous, a room full of people that I didn't know. I wasn't sure if I would like them or if they would like me. I did not know what to expect."

She began with the Level 1 Teaching Assistant course and went on to complete Level 2 Teaching Assistant, Mental Health First Aid, SEND, and Understanding Autism. Each one adding to her skills, confidence and knowledge.

Finding confidence and connection
The training experience was more than just about learning - it was about connection, teamwork and personal growth.

"I enjoyed learning and developing my skills and knowledge, and a great sense of purpose and achievement. However, I really enjoyed coming together with a great tutor, a great group of people, learning and sharing our experiences together. I was able to offer support and encouragement to others and to them from me. We became a great team."

Life after the course
Completing the course had a life-changing impact. Not only did she achieve several new qualifications, but she also found a new career direction that she truly loves.

"Well, attending these courses has already made major changes to my life! I have completed the courses and obtained great qualifications, and extended my knowledge and understanding. I have met lovely people, many of whom I am still in contact with, and I really value their friendships.

I also have an incredible new job, which I am thoroughly enjoying and could not be doing without attending the courses.

I am now an Adult Tutor for Realise."

Paying it forward
Now working as an Adult Tutor for Realise, she is passionate about helping others take the same step forward.

"I am passionate about giving others the opportunity I had, to expand on their knowledge, training and qualifications, to open doors to promotion or a new chapter. I am also extremely proud of the work we do, educating and supporting adults to be able to support and understand our children in an educational setting.

My goal is to support as many people as I can to achieve their goals and ambitions."

A message to others
Her advice to anyone considering a course with Realise is simple:

"Go for it! Even if it's been a long time since you studied, you will likely make friends, have a supportive learning environment and gain excellent recognised qualifications."

Inspired by great teaching
She also shared heartfelt praise for her tutor, whose passion and support inspired her to join the Realise team herself.

"Lindsey was an exceptional tutor, she was warm, friendly, engaging and showed genuine empathy and understanding not just to me but to the entire cohort. She ensured that all her learners were comfortable, included and felt valued. Where appropriate, made adjustments to support all in the class.

She used various methods to help us retain the knowledge, from poster making to group activities. She would frequently check in on us both regarding our learning, but also our well-being.

She inspired me so much with her attitude and passion for teaching that I realised I wanted to be part of the team to help others on their journey too."

Looking back with gratitude

"I am very grateful for Lindsey and Realise for the training, but also the career opportunity."
