Ruth built her confidence and skill set.

Ruth took a digital skills course and now feels more confident and ready to use her skills online.

Ruth’s story

Ruth, a care-worker from Rochdale, found that a free digital skills course could help boost her career and personal development.

After looking into ways to increase her skillset, Ruth discovered a fully funded training programme was running in her area. The course was delivered by her local training provider, Realise, and made possible through local funding from Manchester combined authority.

Ruth jumped at the chance to gain a free qualification, which not only promised to grow her knowledge around the internet but utilising digital technology to communicate with others.

The programme ran over one week and was delivered in a classroom. It was led by an expert tutor, Gail Bridge, who coached and supported Ruth.

Ruth explained that the programme offers a wide variety of learning topics: “I have learned quite a lot about creating, editing, filing, communication and staying safe online.”

Ruth praised the support that she received from her tutor at Realise. She said: “My tutor Gail was helpful, friendly, and laid down ground rules. She really wanted us to learn!”

Gail said: “The digital skills course is a great way for people wanting to improve their basic knowledge and build confidence when online. I enjoy teaching this class as it can be life changing for learners, especially with so much of life now being online”.

Ruth is now utilising her newfound skills within her role as a carer and encouraging others to follow in her footsteps. She explains: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole course. I would encourage anyone considering it to just do it. Everyone is helpful, friendly and wanting you to succeed!”
