Kirklees residents got hands on hairdressing experience at the Skills Hub

Realise

Prepped with hair tools, blockheads and a wealth of knowledge, Realise hosted a ‘hairdressing open day’ in our new centre: the Skills Hub.

The open day

The event gave Kirklees residents the opportunity to get hands-on experience with hair styling and find out about fully funded courses which could lead to a bright career in the fast-paced sector.

The free ‘give it go’ session in the Skills Hub gave visitors the chance to try different hair styling techniques, such as plaiting and twisting, for themselves. Attendees were able to speak one-on-one with trainers, so that they could ask any questions they may have, learn more about the courses and sign up.

Senior Training and Development Officer, Natalie McDermott talked about the session, saying: “It was great to host an open day in The Skills Hub and advertise our services in a central Huddersfield location. In the future, we hope to run our new level 1 hairdressing course in the Skills Hub.”

Supporting Kirklees residents

Managing Director of Realise Gregg Scott said: “We are pleased to provide practical taster sessions to the residents of Kirklees and allow them to find out about our new hairdressing award and explore employment opportunities in person.

The Skills Hub enables us to meet with residents and give residents a better understanding of how our adult education programmes can help them to get into employment, build their skills and develop their confidence.”

About the programme

The level 1 hairdressing award course has been developed to give those who are looking for work or are eager to develop new skills the opportunity to begin an exciting career in the hair industry.

The nationally-recognised qualification is fully funded through West Yorkshire Combined Authority so there’s absolutely no cost to the participant and the course can be delivered flexibly to meet the availability and needs of learners.

Natalie McDermott continued: “Our programme not only gives West Yorkshire residents the chance to develop their hairdressing knowledge, but also to develop their general employability skills.

Our trainers will work with them to complete a practice job application so that they understand the process and can confidently find and apply for job opportunities when they complete the course.”
