Learning, leading, achieving: Ryan’s journey to award finalist
For Ryan Wilkinson, learning has been about far more than gaining a qualification. Through the Level 5 Diploma in Leadership and Management for Adult Care with Realise, Ryan has grown in confidence, strengthened his leadership skills and earned recognition as a finalist in the 2026 Investors in People Awards.
As a Project Manager at Creative Support, Ryan wanted to build on his experience and develop the knowledge needed to lead with confidence.
“I wanted to become a better and more confident manager, develop my professional skills and continue progressing within the sector.”
Like many learners, Ryan initially found it challenging to balance work, learning and personal commitments. With support from his manager and Realise trainer, Loveness Gosha, he found ways to manage his time more effectively and make the most of every learning opportunity.
Loveness Gosha, Trainer at Realise, said:
"Ryan has been a joy to train from the very beginning. He is fully engaged, keen to learn and always gives his best. His commitment to his development has been outstanding, and it has been fantastic to see the progress he has made. Ryan also benefits from having a very supportive manager who encourages and champions his growth. With his positive attitude, dedication and willingness to learn, I have no doubt that he will go far in his career."
Since starting the diploma, Ryan has become more organised, improved his time management and developed a deeper understanding of leadership. The programme has encouraged him to reflect on his approach, adapt his leadership style to different situations and support his team more effectively.
One of the biggest changes has been learning to step back and reflect.
“I am now much more able to look at different scenarios thoughtfully, consider what went well and what could have been done differently.”
The impact extends beyond Ryan's own development. He now leads team meetings with greater confidence, encourages reflective practice and helps staff identify opportunities to learn and grow.
His progress has not gone unnoticed.
Ryan has been shortlisted as one of nine finalists for The Award for Young Person of the Year (100+ employees) at the 2026 Investors in People Awards. The awards celebrate individuals and organisations who are setting the standard for workplace culture, leadership, development and wellbeing.
Ryan believes the diploma has played an important role in that achievement.
“The course has developed me as a young leader, increased my confidence massively and encouraged me to reflect on my own skills and leadership. Being shortlisted is something I am really proud of, and I feel this course has been a big part of my development and progression so far.”
Although he is still completing his diploma, Ryan is already seeing the benefits every day, both in his own career and in the support he provides to colleagues.
For anyone considering an diploma, his message is simple:
“Don't be afraid to do it. It gives you the opportunity to learn more about your role, reflect on your practice and develop as a leader.”
Ryan's story shows how the right support, a commitment to learning and the willingness to reflect can help people grow into confident leaders, making a positive difference for their teams, their organisations and the people they support.
