SENCO course inspires new learning approach
Heather enrolled on the Realise SENCO Skills Bootcamp to better support children in her nursery who need understanding, patience and a tailored provision. With Realise’s expert-led training and practical approach, Heather gained the confidence, knowledge and tools needed to advocate effectively for children with SEND.
Building confidence through practical learning
One of the most valuable aspects of the course was its clear, practical focus on the Graduated Approach, a key framework from the SEND Code of Practice that underpins effective support for children with additional needs.
Heather tells us more: “A key strategy discussed in the course was the Graduated Approach, which helped me understand more about supporting children in my nursery.”
Through Realise’s supportive delivery, Heather was able to break down the theory into manageable, real-world practice she could confidently apply in her setting.
Understanding the Graduated Approach
During the course, Heather explored how the four-stage cycle — Assess, Plan, Do, Review — helping practitioners to provide structured, consistent support that responds directly to each child’s needs.
Heather adds: “During this session, I learned that supporting children with SEND requires ongoing assessment and careful planning.”
The training helped Heather understand how continuous observation, reflection, and collaboration with parents and colleagues leads to more effective outcomes for children.
Turning learning into everyday practice
Thanks to Realise’s hands-on approach, Heather is now well prepared to put her learning into action. She plans to use the Graduated Approach daily to identify needs early and adapt provision confidently.
Heather continues: “In my everyday practice, I will use this cycle when supporting children who may require additional help. For example, if a child is experiencing speech and language difficulties, I might plan activities such as storytelling sessions, small group discussions or interactive games to support their learning.”
Regular review of progress, alongside colleagues and parents, ensures support remains appropriate, flexible and effective — a core message which was reinforced throughout the course.
Ready for the SENCO role
Reflecting on her experience, Heather describes the Realise SENCO Skills Bootcamp as both challenging and rewarding, with clear impact on her professional confidence.
Heather adds: “I have enjoyed the SENCO bootcamp course. It has been challenging but educational and I feel I have learned essential skills that will support me in my new role as a SENCO.”
